Evaluation of Educational Workshops

That took place at the Kenscoff orphanage on December 21-24, 2010

Infant Group (about 1 year old)

Upon arrival:
- Amorphous
- Two cried until we took them to reassure them
- Sitting
- One tried to lie on our feet to sleep
- One fell asleep in our arms

During:

They were offered several stimuli:
- touch, taste
- sound, music
- visual

The first 15 minutes:

- Indifference

- They look around, discovering new premises

- Then the guitar awakens Shamia, she begins to sway.

- The sounds of rattles stimulates them.

- They come to take the objects and move them.

- Playing and light music particularly stimulates Woudley.

- Dorcelia and Geraldine take longer to awaken, but with tangible stimuli, they start to become interested in toys.

At the end:

- No smiles, but obvious pleasure

- In the end, nobody cried.

Baby Group (1 to 3 years)

Upon arrival:

-Small cars attract them

- Made most smile

During:

- Very popular: throw or kick the ball
-2 babies stack several blocks on each other
-3 manage to assemble large lego
-2 have trouble walking; they walked and they became more resourceful.
- Very little interaction between them, but interaction was good with us.

At the end:

- Difficulty in leaving the toys: they yield in exchange for candy.

- When we came out afterwards, they communicated more with us.

               Discoveries Workshop                                                          A little show..

Infants Workshop                                                      Proud of her success.

Preschool Group I (3 to 5 years)

Upon arrival:

Most are already very excited and want to take the toys immediately.

During:

Even the autistic child was in contact, played with the ball and another child for approx. 40 minutes. They had a lot of fun interacting, sharing toys, laughing.

- Three had asked to go to the bathroom and returned quickly.
- In a puzzle, a child develops rapidly in 10-15 minutes, coming more to involve forms.
- Lots of action and noise!
- No need to use music.

At the end:

Playful, sweet love, willing to put the toys down for the candy, except 2 which we found the toys they were hiding! The autistic child returned to his bubble and his mannerisms towards the end.

Preschool Group II

Upon arrival:

They sit all alone, not going to the toys. Yet they were happy to go to the workshop. One of them had cried for one hour before coming; he smiled upon his arrival.

During:

We were surprised by their apathy. The atmosphere had been slow to warm up.
2 guys and a girl stood up to play ball. 3 guys played with the big lego. They responded to many bright rings. The guitar and the songs had a light atmosphere. Two small ones remained amorphous for thirty minutes despite our invitations to play. One of them finally agreed to throw the ball and catch it. The other was a spectator until we presented the ring game and puzzle; she succeeds the high-hand.

At the end:

Upon being asked to put the toys away in exchange for a candy they run, but one of the first is the “spectator“. The 2nd is one of the first run! They left happy, but discreet. We wondered about all the obvious differences in attitudes between the two preschool groups and concluded the following. When we formed two groups, we first noted (spontaneously and unconsciously) for the first group the names of those that can be seen more easily, extroverts. Remained the introverted, more discreet, for the second group. (The same split was apparently done for groups of means.)

Middle Group I (6 to 8 years)

Upon arrival:

Had a lot of taste, were playful. Calm and disciplined

During:

As soon as they were authorized, they played with different toys: lego, skipping, twirling, etc.. Very independent. Took the initiative games - making music, drawing, reading.
Friendly materials. Learning the biblical account is easy and enjoyable.
They participated well ... All dressed up for Christmas!
The sweet rewards.
Loved when we took out the small "machines ".
Much interaction between them, played together, worked together.

At the end:

Last practice of the recitative and inspection pockets!
All happy.

Workshop: Reading and Games                                         Learning the Bible

Game on!                                             Adolescent girls in bead workshop.

Middle Group II

Upon arrival:

They were connected commonly, enthusiastic. They came up and approached the toys slowly, exploring all around, curious.

Pendant :

Especially interested in lego.
Each play with their own thing, without much interaction.

The books appealed to them, so did the yoyo.
A child became isolated and did not participate in the recitative. The others were enthusiastic and quick learners, they made such gestures gracefully.

Candy, then return to the games. Concentrated, very quiet and still somewhat expansive.
Small cars have caused a stir (to hide them in shoes!).

At the end:

Left with little enthusiasm.

Teen Group (9 to 12 years)

Upon arrival:

They arrived very calm but motivated and disciplined. (All girls)

During:

They were particularly interested in beads that occupied them virtually throughout the workshop. Also played cards, jacks, marbles, "go and find. "
We saw that they enjoy learning and they are pretty. They have good taste (for bracelets and necklaces they make). They were persevering in the workplace.

At the end :

We made them choose a book each. They left with the desire to come back to complete their necklaces and bracelets after eating; they did return without fail. In fact, we had to insist, after a second hour workshop for them to leave their work and return with the others.

Note : Adolescent boys were treated another night at a workshop of free games or dominoes and cards. At least one teenager has been learning to play chess with stakeholders. They were well attended and were interested and playful.

             Free creativity                                                 Timoun of happy!

                          The nursery.                                                         The boy’s dormitory.

Fwet! Cold!                                                     Glued together for warmth.

                                   Alone…                                                          “Tame me…”

Three volunteer godfathers by SOS Haiti had planned their departure for Kenscoff February 2, 2010, but following the massive earthquake that devastated the country, they had to delay their trip to a later date when Sister Donna will be able welcome them to her Kenscoff orphanage.

Fortunately, the region of Kenscoff, where “Les Ouvriers de Paix” focus their action was only minimally affected by the earthquake. All children of the orphanage are safe.
However, Sister Donna informed us that her orphans go hungry because of lack of funds and food supply problems.

The entire team of “Les Ouvriers de Paix” warmly thanked our sponsor, hardware Morin Patrick Saint-François-du-Lac, which has agreed to provide materials for our Kenscoff orphanage workshops .

The sponsor of SOS Haiti is currently preparing her next trip to Haiti, to be held in February 2010. She will spend several months at the orphanage, to lend a hand to Sister Dona and bring some entertainment to children, which will improve the quality of life in the institution. Funds raised by sales of the locker room will be used to provide craft workshops and creative craft at the orphanage, in order to develop an interest among young people for a job and provide the tools so they can take hand rather than joining the ranks of street kids in Haiti.

Appeal to those who are capable of: we need funds for this project, we are also looking for volunteers trained to facilitate these Kenscoff orphanage workshops. The next departure is scheduled for early February 2010, and we are looking for someone who loves children, who can work with their hands and committed to voluntarily transmit their knowledge to children in need.

In Kenscoff, Haiti, Sister Dona Belizaire continues her work with hundreds of orphans. The dream of Father Cico, priest of this town, and Sister Donna (nun with the Sisters of Nazareth redemptive) is that the orphans could receive a more complete education.
